About Canyon Lake
Community History
Canyon Lake was formed by a dam that was built in 1927. Rain water coming from the San Jacinto mountains and surrounding valleys supplied the lake with rain water until 1955, when an agreement between the Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District and Temescal Water Company brought a more stable supply to the reservoir. A treatment plant was built, and later fish screens were installed over the floodgates so that all the fish would not travel downstream to Lake Elsinore.
In 1968, Corona Land Company began the development of Canyon Lake as a picturesque lakeside community. In December 1990, Canyon Lake became an incorporated city, and all of the areas outside the gates are under the jurisdiction of the city council.
