Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
As boating season hits full throttle, we would like to bring to your attention a hidden danger — carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. CO is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas that can be emitted from a boat's engine or generator exhaust fumes that can cause headaches, dizziness, nausea, confusion, loss of consciousness, brain damage, coma, or death. Even when your own boat is not running, exhaust gases from passing boat engines can backdraft into the vessel; this is especially true when idling or traveling at low speed, your boat included. Symptoms to recognize are headache, dizziness, nausea, fatigue, confusion, or shortness of breath. Seek help immediately if you experience any of these symptoms, as prolonged exposure to CO may cause devastating consequences.
